Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Addiction affects people in different ways and from all walks of life. At First Responder Wellness, we know that this means that those seeking help for alcohol or substance misuse and co-occurring mental health issue often need different types of treatment. While residential care is the most common approach to recovery, it isn’t right for everyone. Maybe putting your life on hold to enter treatment isn’t possible or you’re at a stage of recovery where you’re simply looking for transitional care. Whatever your situation, if you can’t commit to inpatient or residential treatment for any reason, our intensive outpatient program may be right for you.

What is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are a form of alcohol, substance use and co-occurring disorders treatment in which patients can receive the high-quality care they need while continuing to live at home. More flexible than inpatient or residential programs, outpatient provides a level of care that lets clients heal on their own terms without disrupting their daily lives.

Clients work toward lasting sobriety and mental wellness by participating in on-site programming, attending meetings and continuing with therapy sessions without sacrificing the ability to manage responsibilities at work or home. Especially useful for those who have recently completed residential treatment, IOPs help patients transition back into independent living where they can practice their new coping skills while maintaining an ongoing relationship with their recovery team.

Is Intensive Outpatient Treatment Right for Me?

Intensive outpatient programs are usually recommended for those who don’t require a medically supervised detox, cannot commit to residential treatment or are transitioning out of long-term care but still need some guidance as they resume their daily lives. Although residential programs are often considered the gold standard of treatment, there is no one right way to heal and IOPs provide a convenient solution for some that can serve as either a starting point for recovery or an intermediary step that helps keep clients on track after returning home. Intensive outpatient care may be ideal for those who:

  • Cannot participate in residential treatment but are strongly committed to getting better
  • Need ongoing support and a structured environment after residential treatment
  • Don’t need or have recently completed detox
  • Have recently experienced a relapse and want to regain a foothold in recovery
  • Want to practice their new coping skills in the real-world
  • Are highly motivated to pursue their treatment goals

At First Responder Wellness, our experienced team comprised of former first responders and culturally competent behavioral health clinicians, can help you determine the appropriate level of care based on your unique needs and goals. To ensure that you have the best possible chance at achieving long-term sobriety, we will consider factors such as your alcohol or substance use history, living environment, mental health concerns, support network and more to make a recommendation that fits your situation.
