When an individual is struggling with trauma, alcohol, substances, or mental health, their friends and family often feel the impact as well. Relationships suffer as lies and secrecy become the norm, and an inability to participate in family activities, casual outings or daily life can cause a rift that’s difficult to mend. As an individual becomes more isolated, manipulative, self-centered, or non-communicative their struggles begin to have a profound effect on those around them.
Unfortunately, this can tear families apart, especially as communication and trust break down. Those affected by an individual’s actions while in the throes of trauma, alcohol, substance abuse, or mental health challenges may become resentful or angry, and feelings of guilt or shame may prevent them from achieving meaningful progress in recovery. Although difficult, individuals and their families can begin to heal with the right support and guidance. That’s why First Responder Wellness offers a Family Program to help clients and their loved ones move forward in recovery together.
For many people, family is a source of comfort and support throughout life, but the effects of spiraling behavioral health can put a strain on these important relationships. Engaging family members in the recovery and wellness process can be vital, however, with research showing that trauma, alcohol, substance abuse, and mental health treatment is more effective when family is involved. At First Responder Wellness, the goal of our Family Program is to help families come together to learn more about behavioral health and how they can support their loved one without enabling their negative behavior.
By learning more about behavioral health, clients and their family members can learn about how it has affected their lives, what they can and cannot control, and how they can recover together. They will also see that they are not alone in their struggles and will have the opportunity to connect with others in similar situations, giving them new insights that may help them down the road.
When an individual begins the recovery and wellness process, negative feelings and other challenges within families don’t disappear overnight. It takes time for the wounds to heal, but professional guidance that helps to repair relationship dynamics and facilitate open, honest communication can help you and your family work through any issues in a productive way.
If you’re a first responder struggling with trauma, alcohol, substance use, or mental health and it has affected your family, or if your loved one is in recovery and you want to support them while addressing your own need to heal, then First Responder Wellness’ Family Program is right for you.
